August Nationals were on 10th - 11th of August at Motopark Raceway. For this race we had bought a new Hoosier Slicks, Weld Draglites for the rear, new QA1 Shocks and Springs. Well the springs were not correct, so we had to go with the old ones, but all other parts were just what we wanted.
On Friday we started our journey to Motopark, and in a little rain we made it before Race Office was closed. It took a while to get inside the office, and before we got the car from the trailer and rear tires changed it was quite dark and late.
Then we headed to our Summer Cottage to have a (Too) short night sleep before Saturday's Qualifications.
Saturday:
On Saturday we arrived to the pits at 8 AM. Before the Tech Inspection we washed and waxed the car because of all that dirt that was flying on it on Friday. Then we were ready to go for the first Qualification Round, since the car passed tech inspection without any problems.
The first Qualification Run was 12,593 with 1,725 60FT time and only 167,56 KM/H Top Speed. We didn't know what went wrong there, since the ET and Speed weren't really good, but Mika adjusted the shocks a little for the next round. On the 2nd Run Mika shifted immediately to the 2nd Gear and the ET was only 13,073 with Top Speed of 167,56 KM/H. So we went to the 3rd Round with the same setup. There 60FT was 1,713 and the car went 12,550 with 168,14 KM/H Top Speed. That was our best run after the Qualifications, since the last one was only 12,583 with 167,83 KM/H Top Speed and 1,738 60FT.
Looks like the weather was not the best for Stockers, since everyone else had same problems too, that ETs weren't as high as they used to be in other events.
A couple of pictures of the Chevelle waiting in the Line Up.
Qualification Results:
For one reason or another, only Five (!) Stockers existed.
The 1st was Arto Sulopuisto with his B/S Firebird. He ran 10,241 that is 0.96 under NHRA Index. I didn't find a good picture of this car from Motopark, so this is from Alastaro.
The 2nd was Jarmo Markkanen with his A/S Firebird. He ran 10,140 that is 0.81 under NHRA Index.
The 3rd was Hannu Palasmaa with his '71 Chevelle. This time he ran 10,296 in CC/S so it's 0.30 under NHRA Index.
The 4th was Mika Lindström with 12,550 that is 0.10 under NHRA Index.
The 5th was Tarja Gynther with E/SA Chevy Camaro. She ran 11,739 that is 0.39 over NHRA Index.
Sunday:
On the Eliminations Day the weather looked really rainy, though it wasn't raining at the Raceway until we were almost ready for racing... A hard rain didn't last long (Luckily), but there was still lots of water to be dried.
When the track was dry, we were called to Line Up. On the first pair, Arto Sulopuisto had a Solo Run. He ran 10,474 and continued to the Semis. Next it was Hannu Palasmaa VS Tarja Gynther. Palasmaa left with 0.001 Reaction Time against Tarja's 0.295 and Hannu pushed to breaks to prevent from Breaking out and continued to the semis against Arto Sulopuisto. Palasmaa ran 10,509 with 10,35 Dial In, Tarja ran 11,757 with 11,70 Dial In. On the last pair Jarmo Markkanen was driving against Mika Lindström. Something happened for us in the Burnout, the tires didn't spin the way they should and that resulted spinning on the starting line. Later we found that the wheels spun on the tires, so some screws need to be installed before the Finals. Anyway Jarmo took 0.012 RT against Mika's 0.186 and ran 10,294 with 10,16 Dial In. Mika ran 12,653 with 12,55 Dial In time.
On the Semi Finals the first pair was between Sulopuisto and Palasmaa. Arto took a bit better RT, 0.016 against Hannu's 0.076. Very close race and Arto was leading, but looks like he was braking a bit too hard and Palasmaa crossed the Finishing Line first without breaking out. 10,425 With 10,37 Dial In for Palasmaa and 10,410 with 10,28 Dial In for Arto. On the other pair Jarmo Markkanen had a Solo Run, 0.007 RT for him and 10,227 with 10.16 Dial In.
So it was Hannu Palasmaa against Jarmo Markkanen in the Finals. But this time Palasmaa took a Red Light by 0.020 so Jarmo took the win. Anyway 0.075 RT for Markkanen, and 10,213 with 10,16 Dial In. Palasmaa ran 10,360 with 10,41 Dial In. Congratulations for the winners!
The next race is already the Final Round in Finnish Championship.
