After the second race at Motopark Raceway we were left with the best ET of 12.434 which was definitely not where we should have been with the newly freshened engine. So we decided to buy an Air&Fuel Ratio Cauge and install that to see if the engine runs rich or lean, even though the spark plugs looked pretty good.
So to test that before the Nitro Nationals we decided to participate in NNC Street Slide on Hyvinkää Airport on June 17th 2017. The event is mostly for street cars, but there is an ET Bracket class as well. The track is slippery since there is zero track prep, just bare asphalt. But this was the only place where we could run full throttle to see what kind of air & fuel mixture we have.
We arrived to the pits in the morning. Bit of fine tuning was done with that air & fuel cauge and then we headed to tech inspection, which was passed easily. Then everything was ready for racing.
First run was at 11:30 AM. I did a small Burnout and tried to launch softly from idle to prevent spinning the tires. I pretty much succeeded in that as the 60FT was 1.882 which is good for a track like this. The air & fuel mixture was OK so I went full throttle until the end, 12.987 & 165.44 KM/H top speed.
Before the second round we did a bit of carburetor tuning as the engine was running a bit rich. This time I did a bit longer burnout, but that didn't pay off since I gave it a bit too much throttle at the starting line and spun the tires. My RT was decent, .072 but my 60 FT wasn't, 2.017. My ET was 13.108 & 166.20 KM/H, so according to the top speed our carburetor tuning went into the right direction.
We let the engine cool down a little and did just a little carburetor tuning as well. Third run was definitely more succesful than the second one, I left with .102 RT and a good 1.861 60FT time. Now it felt like the tires didn't spin much and the car just left nicely. When shifting to 2nd as I hammered the throttle, it spun just a bit but otherwise a great run, 12.853 and 166.36 KM/H top speed. The air & fuel ratio looked very good too.
The fourth run was at 2:04 PM and before that I did even a bit more carburetor tuning, just to test how it would work. As expected it went just a little on the lean side so my top speed wasn't that good, but I also spun the tires big time at the start. So a small red light for me, -.022 and a slow 60FT, 2.009. My ET was 13.091 with 165.21 KM/H top speed.
At this point we were pretty much ready for testing, but we thought we'd participate in the Eliminations as well. Unfortunately someone oiled the other lane from start to finish so the Eliminations had to be cancelled. With that said, we decided to put the car inside the bus and call it a day. It was a fun day as always and we got some important testing done before the Nitro Nationals. And, since the Qualifying order is based on reaction times in ET Bracket, it looks like I was also the #1 Qualifier.
And last but not least...Thanks to Footbait Cortina's crew for lending electricity to charge our battery between the rounds.
