Defa Finals was the Final Round of Finnish Championship Drag Race Series, sponsored by V8 Magazine. In Stock & Super Stock, the Point Standings were interesting before the Finals, so it was going to be another fun weekend for this season. We had installed screws to hold the wheels and tires together for this race, so that the wheels don't spin on the tires when launching.
Friday.
On Friday Afternoon/Evening, we left Vantaa for Alastaro. When we arrived there, we had to spend lots of time in line to wait getting inside the Race Office to get all those papers that we needed. Then we headed to the pits and put our car down, changed the rear tires and we were ready to race on Saturday. But Rust Racing had organized a Pork Barbecue-party for all Team Members and Drivers... It tasted very good, Big Thanks to Rust Racing! Picture.
Saturday.
On Saturday Morning, the sun was shining and it looked like a good Qualification Day. We waxed the car first and when we were called to Line Up, Mika succeeded to get in the same pair as another K/SA Driver, Noora Laine. Very good Burnout for Mika, it stayed on place and did not start crawling forwards. Better 60FT for Noora, 1,661 against Mika's 1,706. Noora drove 12,409 and Mika 12,443 with higher Top Speed, 171,20 against Noora's 169,54 KM/H. So a decent run for us. For the second round, Mika adjusted the Rear Shocks a bit, to make them a little harder. This time we couldn't make a K/SA Heads Up pass, and Mika ended up driving with Arto Sulopuisto with his B/S Firebird. 1,719 60FT for Mika, and 12,506 with 170,28 KM/H Top Speed.
That 2nd Qualification Round was almost done, it was the last category, Super Pro Street on the Track when it started raining, and that rain lasted all evening. Maybe the third run would've been possible without the rain, but you can do nothing for the weather conditions...
Qualification Results.
1. Arto Sulopuisto with B/S Pontiac Firebird. This time he ran 10,128 which is 1.07 under NHRA Index.
2. Jarmo Markkanen with A/S Pontiac Firebird. He ran 10,050 which is 0.90 under NHRA Index.
3. Tarmo Mikkola with SS/GA Chevy Camaro. He ran 9,866 which is 0.68 under NHRA Index.
4. Sami Toppari with SS AMX, the one of those Factory Race Cars. He ran 9,652 in SS/C, so it is 0.39 under the Index.
5. Hannu Palasmaa with CC/S '71 Chevelle. He ran 10,232 which is 0.36 under NHRA Index.
6. Noora Laine with '72 Buick Skylark. She ran 12,409 in K/SA, that is 0.24 under NHRA Index.
7. Mika Lindström with '74 Chevelle, also in K/SA. 12,443 Is 0.20 under NHRA Index.
8. Tarja Gynther with '67 Camaro in E/SA. She ran 11,638 that is 0.06 under NHRA Index.
9. Timo Eronen with his SS/AH Hemi Barracuda. One week earlier at Tierp Arena, Sweden, he unfortunately broke one Hemi, but luckily he was able to get new one installed and ran 9,510. That is 0.21 over NHRA Index.
10. Harri Hassinen with SS/BM Chevy Camaro. A Crank Shaft broke on the first run, so Harri's weekend was done. Only 10,749 for him.
Sunday.
Looking at the Ladder, on the first pair there was Arto Sulopuisto against Noora Laine. To the winner it'd be a Solo Pass on the 2nd Round. Then Tarmo Mikkola against Tarja Gynther, Sami Toppari VS Timo Eronen, Jarmo Markkanen against us and then Hannu Palasmaa VS Harri Hassinen, but since Hassinen's car broke, it would have been a Bye-Run for Hannu.
Unfortunately, Sunday was rainy. It was raining a bit all day, and when it stopped, the Track Crew was able to get the track dry, rubber and everything on and Street Cars were on the line up...Then it started raining again, and no passes were made on Sunday. We put the car on trailer, and left home when they called that this is it.
Final Finnish Championship Standings.
Congrats to the Winners!
For the next season, I guess we won't be making any bigger modifications to the car, but the driver will change - I will be driving whole season, and I can't wait for that!
