The first race in West Coast Street Cup Series was held just a week after FHRA Spring Natinals at Motopark. West Coast Street Cup is driven in airports that are located in the west coast. This year there are two races in Pori, one in Alavus and one in Kalajoki. These events take place on Saturday only, so the Qualifying and Eliminator is driven on the same day. The classes are a bit different than in Finnish Championship series, and the only category where our car fits is ET Bracket.
On Friday we rent a car trailer from a local gas station and once the car was tightened up, we started heading towards Pori. All tools and other stuff was in the Van whole week between these two races. We were able to sleep at our relative's place, as they live in Pori. On Saturday morning we headed to the airport and took the car off the trailer. Tech Inspection was passed and I did a little warm up for the car. Drivers' Meeting was just before the Qualifying started on the starting area.
Both of us knew that the airport would not be as good as a real Drag Strip, so it was interesting to see how the car reacts. My first run was really good... A good burnout and a good RT, too (.028). The car did a big twisting wheelstand (At least compared to the wheelstands it normally does) and 60 FT time 1.652 was just the same it had been a week earlier at Motopark. I ran 12.369 & 167.02 KM/H, so the ET wasn't bad either.
It was a very hot day so I had to drive back to the pits (Instead of going straight back to Line Up) and let the engine cool down a bit. Battery has to be recharged after each run, too, so it won't run out of power... On the second run I took -.027 red light, but otherwise it was pretty much similar to the first one. ET was 12.346 and with 167.82 KM/H top speed. Third run was just a little slower, 12.372 & 167.05 Top Speed, and the fourth and the last Qualifying run was 12.367 & 166.90 KM/H. I didn't improve my best Reaction Times on those runs, either.
A friend was driving his '80 Chevy Monza in ET Bracket, too. Powered by SBC and Nitrous Oxide System this Monza improved it's old record by almost a second running 10.3 ET! But unfortunately he red lighted on the first Elimination round.
Then there was a little break while the guys organizing the event were making the Elimination Ladders. In ET Bracket the Qualifying results are depending on the Reaction Times and to my surprise I was the fourth in Qualifying!
On the first Elimination Round I was running against Rolf Claesson in his '71 Firebird.
Somehow I got sleepy and took a horrible RT on that run, .353. My dial in was 12.35 and Rolf's was 10.20. I ran full throttle, but Rolf overtook me before the finishing line and made me break out by .001. I ran 12.349 & 167.63 and Rolf ran 10,242 & 209.30 KM/H with .173 RT. On this run, I set a new 60 FT record time: 1.640! So losing didn't really matter, as a new record is always a new record!
We put the car back on the trailer and watched the race. After the finals were driven, we headed to our relatives' place again to eat before driving back home. It was an excellent race day on a good track.
Here are a couple of videos:
My runs:
Monza 10.3:
And a Sleeper Volvo Amazon. A nice, original looking car but it is very fast!
Next race is FHRA Drag Race Week at the end of June. See Ya There!
Note: I'll add the Qualifying Results and something about Eliminations as well when the results get posted in Sunrise Cruisers' Web Page.
