NNC Street Slide is an one day Drag Racing event organized mostly for Street Cars. It takes place on Hyvinkää Airport and there is no track prepping. Originally our plan was to just go and watch other guys race, but as the car didn't run very well at Spring Nats in Motopark, and it looked like that new torque converter didn't quite work with this car, we thought it would be worth testing how it runs with the old Munsinger converter anyway.
The idea to go and test the car at the Street Slide came up pretty late, which meant that we had to change the converter pretty fast. Of course it wasn't a big thing to do, and early on Saturday morning we drove to our garage to pick up the Stocker and head to the Street Slide. Our class was ET Bracket just like in West Coast Street Cup, but our plan was not to run the race, just do a couple of test runs to see if everything works good.
First we changed the rear tires and I headed to tech inspection. It was really fast operation and the Malibu passed it easily. After that we "washed" the car as it was really dirty after the rain when coming back from Motopark Spring Nats. Now we were ready to race and pretty soon we headed to the Lineup.
It was clear that the track would be a bit slippery so it was interesting to see how it runs. I was told that it's a good idea to do a bit bigger burnout on the first run, because there is not much rubber on the track. My burnout was a bit longer but when I lifted the LineLock button and car started going forward with tires smoking, starting line came closer really fast. I hit the brakes and later on I was told that all four wheels were locked while trying to stop the car before starting line... When I staged the car, I didn't raise launch RPM at all and decided to leave on idle. When the light went green, I hammered the throttle as usual and found out that shift light flashed faster than usual as tires were spinning quite hard. They spun on the 2nd gear too, and because of traction problems, my 60FT was only 2.159. I ran full throttle to the end and ET was 13.238 with 169.65 KM/H top speed.
Back to the pits and to the lineup. On second run I did a lot smaller burnout. We guessed that there would be no more traction even if I'd smoke the tires a lot. Now my plan was to leave with much less throttle than last time and I did that, but still the launch was a bit hard and tires spun quite a lot. It was better run, though. 60 FT was 1.973 and the car ran 12.739 & 171.59 KM/H.
After these two runs we let the car cool down for a while and during that time we had to recharge the battery as well. After that, we did the third and final run of the day. Another easy burnout on this and more gentle launch than last time. It worked and from what I heard, the Malibu didn't spin at all when I lifted the brakes. However, it started spinning a bit when I pushed the pedal to the floor a bit before shifting to 2nd gear. Still 60 FT time was 1.881 which is not quite bad considering the track conditions and ET was 12.604. Best part was definitely the top speed, 172.00 KM/H! It's very close to our speed record.
At this point it was time to change tires back and put the car on trailer. These test runs showed that the car might run a bit better now, at least considering the top speeds. Interesting to see how it runs on FHRA Drag Race Week on Alastaro Raceway next weekend. See You There!
